If you have apreference for something, you would like to have or do that thing rather than something else.

e.g. Parents can express apreference for the school their child attends...

preference, alternative, choice

这组词都有“选择”的意思。其区别是：

choice强调自由选择,不论选择的方式或多少；preference强调按照自己喜爱的方式进行选择。例如:

She has a preference for Chinese novels.她喜爱中国小说。

alternative强调必须从两个或多个选择中选择一个。例如:

You have the alternative of leaving or staying and behaving.你或是离开,或是留在这里守规矩,两者之间请做选择。

这些名词均含有“选择”之意。

choice侧重指自由选择的权利或特权。

alternative指在相互排斥的两者之间作严格的选择，也可指在两者以上中进行选择。

preference侧重因偏见、爱好或判断等而进行选择。

selection指作广泛的选择，着重选择者的识别力或鉴赏力。
